Overview

This page is a master timeline for Jabalpur, gathered from the sources cited in the articles on this site. Each entry links to a source; where sources disagree, the entry says so. It is a starting point, not a final chronology: many of the oldest dates still rest on reference works rather than on inscriptions or archives.

Key moments

The full list is in the timeline above. In brief, Jabalpur’s story falls into seven eras.

Deep time. The rocks around Jabalpur are famous for fossils. In 1828 W. H. Sleeman found dinosaur remains near Bara Simla Hill, the first in Asia [1].

Ancient. Ashokan relics at Rupnath, about 300 BCE, show that the region was known to the Mauryan empire [1].

Kalachuris of Tripuri (c. 875–12th century). From Tripuri, just outside today’s city, the Kalachuris ruled a large kingdom [1]. Their greatest surviving monument is the Chausath Yogini temple at Bhedaghat, built in the early eleventh century [2]. See Bhedaghat and the Marble Rocks.

The Gond kingdom of Garha (12th–18th century). Gond rulers built Madan Mahal and ruled from Garha. Sangram Shah expanded the kingdom; Rani Durgavati ruled from 1550 and died fighting the Mughals in 1564 [1]. See Rani Durgavati and Madan Mahal Fort.

Marathas (1742–1818). The Peshwa invaded in 1742; the Marathas of Sagar annexed Garha in 1781; around 1798 the Bhonsles of Nagpur took over [1].

British Jubbulpore (1818–1947). After 1818 the British made the town a cantonment and administrative centre [1]. In 1857 the Gond king Shankar Shah and his son Raghunath Shah were executed by cannon [3]. The railway came in 1867 [4], colleges and the Hitkarini Sabha followed [1][15], and the Gun Carriage Factory opened in 1904 [16]. See British-era Jubbulpore, Education and Institutions and Railways and Industry.

Freedom struggle (1920s–1948). Jabalpur saw the 1923 Flag Satyagraha [5], the Tripuri Congress of 1939 [6], and the immersion of Gandhi’s ashes in 1948 [7]. See Freedom Movement, Tilwara Ghat and Subhadra Kumari Chauhan.

Modern Jabalpur (1947–today). Jabalpur became the seat of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and gained a university in 1956 [8][9]. Bargi Dam was built between 1975 and 1988 [12]. A strong earthquake struck in 1997 [13], and in 2003 the city became the headquarters of the West Central Railway [14]. See Bargi Dam, Osho and Jabalpur and Literary Heritage.

People and events

Rulers and dynasties are tagged dynasty; individuals are tagged person; sites are tagged place. Use the tags to filter the timeline.

Why it matters

A single timeline shows how often Jabalpur has been a frontier and a centre at once: a Kalachuri capital, a Gond stronghold, a British garrison, a meeting place of the freedom movement, and now a railway and judicial headquarters.

What survives today

Monuments from each era still stand: the Chausath Yogini temple, Madan Mahal, colonial colleges and the High Court building, and the factories of the twentieth century [2][8][15][16].

Myths and documented history

Two common claims are flagged: the exact founding date of Madan Mahal, and the claim that the city was officially renamed in 2006 [1].
