Overview

Rani Durgavati is the most celebrated figure in Jabalpur’s history. She was born into a Chandel family and married into the Gond royal house of Garha. She ruled the kingdom from 1550 as regent for her young son. In 1564 she died fighting a Mughal army sent with Emperor Akbar’s permission [1][2].

Her story reaches us through two kinds of source. One is the Mughal court chronicle, the Akbarnama of Abul Fazl [4]. The other is a large body of later tradition. This article keeps the two apart.

Key moments

  • Birth (1524). She is traditionally said to have been born on 5 October 1524. The date comes from a horoscope [1].
  • Marriage. She married Dalpat Shah, son of the powerful king Sangram Shah. Three different accounts of how the match came about survive: a svayamvara, an exchange of letters, and the Akbarnama’s version that her father was in financial trouble [1].
  • Regency (1550–1564).
    • Their son Vir Narayan was born in 1545. When Dalpat Shah died in 1550, Durgavati took charge of the kingdom [1].
    • She drove back an invasion by Baz Bahadur, the sultan of Malwa [1].
    • Akbar conquered Malwa in 1562. The rich Gond kingdom now shared a border with the Mughals [2].
  • The invasion of 1564.
    • Akbar’s general, Khwaja Abdul Majid Asaf Khan, invaded with the emperor’s permission [1][2].
    • The 1906 Imperial Gazetteer says he defeated her army at Singorgarh, in today’s Damoh district [3].
    • The decisive battle was fought at Narrai, in a valley between a hill range and the Gaur and Narmada rivers [2].
    • On 24 June 1564, wounded by arrows, she is recorded as having taken her own life with a dagger rather than be captured [1].
  • After her death. Vir Narayan held out at Chauragarh, but he was killed when the fort fell, and the women of the fort committed jauhar [2]. In 1567 Akbar restored a smaller kingdom to Chandra Shah [2].

People and events

  • Durgavati: queen and regent.
  • Dalpat Shah: her husband.
  • Sangram Shah: her father-in-law, who built up the kingdom.
  • Vir Narayan: her son.
  • Asaf Khan: the Mughal commander.
  • Akbar: the emperor who allowed the campaign.
  • Baz Bahadur: the Malwa sultan she defeated.

The Akbarnama, as cited by modern historians, is the main contemporary account. It was written from the winning side [4].

Why it matters

Durgavati is remembered as a ruler who defended her kingdom against the strongest empire of her age. Her death made her a symbol of resistance. Jabalpur keeps her memory alive:

  • 24 June is observed as Balidan Diwas [1].
  • India Post issued a stamp in her honour on 24 June 1988 [1].
  • The city’s university and its museum bear her name.

What survives today

  • Memorials. The museum and the university in Jabalpur are named after her. A memorial is reported at the battle site near Jabalpur; its exact location needs checking.
  • Places tradition links to her. Madan Mahal fort and several city tanks are associated with her in tradition. See Madan Mahal Fort.
  • The museum. See Rani Durgavati Museum.

Myths and documented history

Documented:

  • her regency;
  • the Mughal invasion of 1564;
  • her death in that campaign;
  • her son’s death at Chauragarh;
  • the 1567 settlement.

Where sources disagree:

  • Her father’s name. The Akbarnama gives Salbahan; later stories name Keerat Singh of Kalinjar [1].
  • Her marriage. The marriage stories contradict one another [1].
  • The battle sites. Singorgarh versus Narrai: these were probably two stages of one campaign, but this needs checking [2][3].
  • The manner of her death. Most accounts describe suicide in the face of capture. Popular memory frames it as martyrdom, and both framings appear side by side [1].

Tradition:

  • that she was a Gond by birth;
  • the svayamvara story;
  • the exact number of tanks she built.

  • उनका संरक्षण-काल;
  • 1564 का मुग़ल आक्रमण;
  • उसी अभियान में उनकी मृत्यु;
  • चौरागढ़ में पुत्र की मृत्यु;

  • उनका जन्म से गोंड होना;
  • स्वयंवर की कथा;
