Overview
Jabalpur’s deep past shows up in two ways. The first is geology. The rocks around the city have produced dinosaur bones since 1828 [3]. The second is archaeology. About 12 km west of the city, at Tewar village, is the mound of ancient Tripuri. It has been excavated several times since 1952 and has produced pottery, coins and other objects [1][2].
This article sticks to what the sources record and marks the rest as open.
Key moments
- 1828: dinosaur bones. William Henry Sleeman was a British officer. Near Jabalpur he collected isolated sauropod tail vertebrae from the Lameta Formation. Carrano, Wilson and Barrett treat this as the start of dinosaur collecting in central India [3].
- 3rd century BCE: Ashoka at Rupnath. At Rupnath there is an Ashokan Minor Rock Edict. The site was formerly counted with Jabalpur and is now in Katni district. ASI dates it to the third century BCE and lists its protection notifications of 1913 and 1925 [4]. In the edict Ashoka describes becoming a lay follower of the Buddha and orders that the message be carved on rock.
- 3rd–2nd century BCE: the city-state of Tripuri. Copper coins with the legend Tirpuri show that Tripuri issued money in its own name [2].
- c. 2nd century BCE – 3rd century CE: a run of rulers. Coins found at Tripuri include:
- lead coins of Datta rulers such as Bhavadatta and Abhayadatta;
- a Mitra coin;
- several Satavahana issues;
- sealings and coins of the Bodhi kings Shiva Bodhi, Vasu Bodhi and Chandra Bodhi [2].
- Later centuries at Bheraghat. At Bheraghat, ASI notes sculptures ranging from a 2nd-century CE Kushana-period piece to later work [5].
People and events: the excavations
According to the ASI Jabalpur Circle [1]:
- 1952: Dr M. G. Dikshit of Sagar University made the first excavation of the Tewar mound.
- 1965–70: a joint programme of the Madhya Pradesh Department of Archaeology, M. S. University of Baroda, Deccan College (Pune) and Sagar University.
- 1966–67: a season directed by Prof. K. D. Bajpai and Dr U. V. Singh.
- 1967–68: a later Sagar season that confirmed the earlier findings.
Wikipedia’s summary adds two details from published surveys [2]:
- H. D. Sankalia led the 1966–67 joint work.
- The finds included black-and-red ware and microliths (small stone tools).
Why it matters
Tripuri shows that the Jabalpur area was a real urban centre long before the Kalachuri kings. It minted its own coins and was ruled by a series of dynasties. The dinosaur finds give Jabalpur a separate claim: it is one of the founding sites of Indian palaeontology.
What survives today
- The Tewar mound is an ASI site with no entry fee [1].
- The Rupnath edict is still in place on the rock [4].
- Excavated material and sculpture are held in museums, including Jabalpur’s Rani Durgavati Museum. Which objects are displayed where still needs checking.
Visiting
ASI lists Jabalpur as the nearest air, rail and bus hub for Tewar and gives no entry fee [1]. The site is a mound, not a built monument. There is little to see without a guide.
Myths and documented history
Documented:
- the 1828 fossil find [3];
- the Tripuri coins [2];
- the excavation seasons [1];
- the Rupnath edict [4].
Not established:
- Continuous settlement since the Copper Age. Chalcolithic-type sherds turned up, but the excavators could not confirm a Chalcolithic settlement [2].
- Tripuri as the capital of the Mahabharata’s Chedi. This is a traditional identification, not an excavated fact.

- भवदत्त और अभयदत्त जैसे दत्त शासकों के सीसे के सिक्के;
- एक मित्र सिक्का;
- कई सातवाहन सिक्के;
- 1828 का जीवाश्म [3];
- त्रिपुरी के सिक्के [2];
- उत्खनन के सत्र [1];
