Overview

Tilwara Ghat is a Narmada ghat on the western side of Jabalpur [1][4]. It is remembered for one event above all: after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination in January 1948, part of his ashes was immersed in the Narmada at Jabalpur, and local and travel sources name Tilwara Ghat as the place [1]. A memorial to Gandhi is reported there [1].

The evidence is uneven. An archival record at the National Cultural Audiovisual Archives confirms that the immersion at Jabalpur was filmed, but its online catalogue entry does not name the ghat or give a date [2]. The link with Tilwara rests mainly on a secondary source, so this article is marked partially verified.

Key moments

  • March 1939: The 52nd session of the Indian National Congress met at Tripuri, a village near Jabalpur [3].
  • 1948: Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in the Narmada at Jabalpur, at Tilwara Ghat according to the sources we found [1][2].

People and events

Gandhi’s ashes. After Gandhi’s death, his ashes were divided and sent to many places in India for immersion in rivers and the sea. Jabalpur was one of them [2]. The NCAA record shows the event was important enough to be filmed. A Gandhi Smarak was later built at Tilwara [1]. We could not find the date of the ceremony or the names of those who led it, and we have not guessed them.

Tripuri, 1939. The Tripuri session was one of the most dramatic in Congress history. Subhas Chandra Bose had just been re-elected president against Gandhi’s wishes, defeating Pattabhi Sitaramayya. At Tripuri he was gravely ill and was carried in on a stretcher. Govind Ballabh Pant moved a resolution affirming faith in Gandhi’s leadership and asking the president to form his Working Committee in line with Gandhi’s wishes. It passed. Bose resigned in April 1939 and soon formed the Forward Bloc [3]. One travel source says the session was held at Tilwara Ghat [1]; others place it at Tripuri village near Jabalpur [3]. The two are not far apart, but the exact ground is not settled here.

Why it matters

Tilwara ties Jabalpur to the national story of the freedom movement at its two ends: the 1939 crisis inside the Congress nearby, and the mourning for Gandhi in 1948. For the city, the immersion made the Narmada part of the national farewell.

What survives today

The ghat is still used for bathing and rituals. A Gandhi memorial is reported at the site [1]. The NCAA holds the film record of the immersion [2].

Visiting

Tilwara Ghat is on the Narmada on Jabalpur’s western edge. We found no official timings or visitor facilities and have not listed any. No map pin is shown because we could not find citable coordinates.

Myths and documented history

Documented: the Tripuri session of March 1939 near Jabalpur [3]; the immersion of Gandhi’s ashes at Jabalpur [2].

Reported but not yet confirmed from a primary source: that the immersion was at Tilwara Ghat, and that the Gandhi Smarak stands there [1].

Disputed: that the Tripuri session was held at Tilwara Ghat itself [1][3].
