Overview
Gwarighat is a riverside neighbourhood and bathing ghat on the Narmada in Jabalpur. For most people in the city it is simply “the ghat”: the place for an evening walk, a dip on a festival morning, a cremation, or the aarti at dusk [1][4]. Several faiths share the bank. Besides the Maa Narmada temple there is Gurdwara Gwarighat Sahib, a Jain temple, and a temple and ashram for followers of Sai Baba [1].
This article keeps to what can be checked. Dates for the ghat’s origin and for the start of the daily aarti were not found in any source we could open, so they are left as open questions.

People and events
The evening aarti is the ghat’s signature. Lamps are waved toward the river from the Maa Narmada temple steps while bells ring and the crowd sings [1][2]. On Narmada Jayanti the scale grows. In 2025, according to press reports, devotees bathed early, the idol of the goddess was carried in procession to the bank, milk was offered, and halwa prasad was shared. Ministers took part, and the organisers, the Maa Narmada Bhakt Mandal, appealed to people to keep the river free of plastic and soap [3].
The gurdwara holds a tradition that Guru Nanak came here and turned local robbers away from crime. It is an important belief for the Sikh community of Jabalpur, but we did not find a historical source for the visit, so it is listed below as tradition [1].
Why it matters
The Narmada is the reason Jabalpur sits where it does, and Gwarighat is where the city meets the river most directly. The ghat shows how religious life in Jabalpur is layered: Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Sai devotees use the same stretch of bank [1]. It is also where the city’s concern for the river is most visible, in the repeated calls to stop pollution at festivals [3].
What survives today
Gwarighat is an active place of worship, not a heritage monument. What survives is a practice: the daily aarti, the Kartik fair and Narmada Jayanti [1][2]. Buildings on the bank are maintained by temple and gurdwara committees and the local administration [1]. A riverfront redevelopment has been proposed, which may change the look of the ghat [3].
Visiting
Gwarighat is inside the city, on its south-western side. The aarti at sunset is the best time to come. Expect very large crowds on Narmada Jayanti (in January or February, by the lunar calendar) and during Kartik [1][2]. Dress modestly near temples and the gurdwara, cover your head in the gurdwara, and respect cremation areas. Please don’t use soap or plastics in the river [3].
Myths and documented history
Documented: the ghat’s location, its temples and gurdwara, the Kartik fair, Narmada Jayanti celebrations, and the 2021 presidential visit [1][2][3].
Tradition: the visit of Guru Nanak, and the healing power of the Narmada Siddh Kund near Uma Ghat, where sages are said to have performed tapas [1]. These are beliefs held with respect by devotees. They are not proven events.
