Why go

Dhuandhar is where the Narmada drops into the gorge and throws up a mist that looks like smoke. Incredible India says that is where the name comes from [1]. Travel writers describe the noise as something you hear before you see the falls. If you want the geology and the debate about how high the falls really are, read our history page, Dhuandhar Falls. This page is for planning the visit.

What you will see and do

You can approach the falls from either bank of the Narmada [3]. A long path curves around the falls and lets you get close to the river [4]. A blog notes plenty of public parking and many shops selling marble goods, and that the rocks near the falls can be slippery [5].

The ropeway. A ropeway, called a cable car by some sources, crosses the river above the falls. It starts on the east bank, crosses to the west bank and returns [2][3]. A 2017 Outlook Traveller writer rode a glass-enclosed car for the aerial view and called the drop about 100 feet [4]. That differs from the 30 m figure in India’s UNESCO dossier [7], and our history page explains why the numbers disagree.

Hours and tickets: what is reported

None of these figures comes from an official notice, so use them only as a guide.

  • Ropeway fare: 55 per person (blog, updated 2023) [5]; 85 for a full trip (IANS Life) [6]; 95 round trip (Outlook Traveller, 2017) [4].
  • Ropeway hours: 10:30 to 18:00, with a lunch closure from 13:30 to 14:00 [4]. Another source gives 10:30 to 17:30 [2].
  • Falls: a blog lists 6:30 to 20:30 [5], while the TravelTriangle page gives that range in one place and “sunrise to sunset” in another [2]. The same page says there is no entry fee [2].

The spread in fares is large enough that you should ask at the counter before you queue.

Monsoon or winter

Monsoon (July to September). Both Incredible India and TravelTriangle name July to September as the time of the heaviest flow [1][2]. A blog says the most powerful water comes right after the monsoon, around late September to early October [5]. Outlook Traveller reported the ropeway closed during the monsoon [4], and Incredible India notes that boat rides may pause for safety in full flow [1]. So the best view of the water can come with a closed ropeway. Check before you set out.

Winter (October to March). Incredible India describes calmer water, better boating conditions and comfortable weather for the cable car and viewpoints [1]. The falls are less thunderous, but the day is easier to plan. Editorial advice: if you want both the full roar and a working ropeway, late September or October is worth trying, but confirm each by phone or locally, since we found no official schedule.

Summer. A blog warns that daytime temperatures are high and suggests water, sunglasses and sunscreen [5].

Getting there

Incredible India says Bhedaghat is about 20 to 30 km from Jabalpur city and lists taxi, auto-rickshaw and local bus as road options [1]. TravelTriangle says about 25 km [2]. Wikipedia’s Bhedaghat page says an auto or cab can easily be hired from the city [8]. The falls are about five minutes’ drive from the Marble Rocks, according to Outlook Traveller [4].

Eat and stay nearby

A blog says there are resorts and hotels near the falls and suggests lunch there if you arrive by noon, but it names none [5]. We do not list restaurants because none was confirmed by a source.
