Why go

Most visitors come to Bhedaghat for the river and the falls. The temple on the hill is the quiet part of the day. Instead of a tower, it is a ring of open cells, each originally holding a carved goddess, and it is looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India [1]. For the scholarship, dates and the argument over whether there were 64, 81 or 84 figures, read our history page, Chausath Yogini Temple. This page is about the visit.

The climb

The temple is on a hilltop above the Narmada, reached by a flight of steps [2][6]. The number is not settled. Incredible India and a travel blog say 108 [2][3]; IANS Life says more than 150, and Onmanorama says 150 [5][4]. Plan for a real climb whichever is right. One blog author calls the temple serene and usually quiet [3].

At the top, Incredible India says the courtyard offers a panoramic view of the Narmada [2].

What you will see

The structure is a circular cloister. ASI describes 84 cells with 84 sculptures of Brahmanical deities: 64 are yoginis, and the others include Ganesha, Bhairava and Hanuman. ASI notes that many goddess names carved on the pedestals differ from those in Sanskrit texts [1]. Wikipedia, citing the art historian Vidya Dehejia, says there are three entrances, two on the west and one to the south-east, and gives 81 cells as her count [6]. The counts differ, so do not be surprised if a guide gives you a different number.

In the courtyard stands a later shrine, now a Gauri-Shankar temple, where worship may continue (the history page explains how it came about). Please keep the usual manners: dress modestly, speak softly, and do not touch the sculptures. ASI notes a Kushana-era sculpture of the 2nd century CE and red sandstone pieces of about the 8th century on the site, which suggest earlier shrines [1]. Incredible India says the temple is believed to have been built in the 10th century under the Kalachuri rulers [2]; our history page gives the scholarly dating. The figures show wear. IANS Life calls the temple partly damaged [5].

How it fits with Bhedaghat

A blog puts the walk from Dhuandhar Falls to the temple at about 1.5 km [3]. The Marble Rocks boat ride starts at the ghat in the same town: see Marble Rocks boat ride and Dhuandhar Falls visit. For a day that combines all three, see Bhedaghat day trip.

Editorial advice: put the climb in the morning or late afternoon rather than at noon, when the steps are hottest.

Opening hours

ASI’s page for the monument lists no hours or fees [1]. A travel blog says 8:00 to 18:00 [3]. That is the only figure found and it is not official, so ask locally. We did not find a ticket price and do not state one.

Getting there

The temple is in Bhedaghat, about 20 km from Jabalpur according to Wikipedia’s Bhedaghat page, which adds that an auto or cab can easily be hired from the city [7]. Other sources give different distances; see the boat ride page for the range.

Eat and stay nearby

We found no source for eateries near the temple, so none are listed. A blog says resorts and hotels stand near Dhuandhar Falls [3].

Good to know

  • Faith site: this is both a protected monument and a place where people may worship. Behave as in a temple.
  • Carry water, wear good shoes, and leave extra time for the steps.

  • Number of steps: 108 (Incredible India, blog) versus more than 150 (IANS Life, Onmanorama). Count or find an ASI figure.
  • Opening hours, any ticket, and photography rules. ASI's page lists none; the 8:00 to 18:00 figure is from a blog.
  • Diameter: ASI gives 130 m outer and 116 m inner; Incredible India and Wikipedia give about 125 feet. The units look inconsistent, so no diameter is stated here.
  • Walking distance from Dhuandhar Falls (blog says about 1.5 km) and whether a vehicle road reaches the base of the steps.
  • Incredible India's page appeared to claim a UNESCO World Heritage status. The site is on India's Tentative List only, as part of Bhedaghat-Lametaghat; we have not repeated the claim.
