The name
Siddhidatri means “giver (datri) of siddhi” - perfection, success, or spiritual attainment [3]. Editions of the hymn that lists her differ slightly: the Gita Press text reads Siddhidatri, while the older Pradipa commentary reads Siddhida; both mean the same [2].
Place in the Navadurga
She is the ninth and last name in the Devi Kavacham. After naming her, verse 5 closes the list: these are “proclaimed as the nine Durgas”, names “spoken by the great-souled Brahma” [1]. The Kavacham is recited before the Durga Saptashati, though it is not part of that text [2]. Siddhidatri follows Mahagauri (day 8); with her the nine nights are complete.
Stories and sources
Shiva and the left half. According to a widely told devotional tradition, at the beginning of creation Shiva worshipped the formless Goddess to gain the power to create. She appeared as Siddhidatri, granted him the siddhis, and became his left half - the form known as Ardhanarishvara, half Shiva and half Parvati [3][4]. Reference works cite modern books rather than a specific Purana for this story [3], so we treat it as tradition.
The siddhis. Devotional writers name the eight classical siddhis (anima, becoming tiny; mahima, vast; laghima, weightless; garima, heavy; prapti, reaching anywhere; prakamya, fulfilling wishes; ishitva, lordship; vashitva, control) [4]. One source reports that the Brahmavaivarta Purana lists eighteen [4]; we have not checked that text.
Wider tradition. She is linked with names in the Lalita Sahasranama such as Siddheshvari and Siddhamata [4]. This is a comparison across texts, not evidence of her origin [2].
Why devotees worship her
Devotees believe Siddhidatri grants success in effort and progress in spiritual practice, and that she is worshipped by gods, sages and siddhas alike [4]. Worshipping her on the last day is seen as completing the Navratri vow.
Symbolic qualities
As symbolism, she stands for completion - the “result” after eight days of discipline. The Ardhanarishvara link is often read as balance between masculine and feminine, stillness and energy [3]. Her lotus seat suggests attainment without harshness.
Iconography
She has four arms holding a discus (chakra), conch (shankha), mace (gada) and lotus, and sits on a full-blown lotus; some images show a lion [3][4]. Some paintings show gods, sages, gandharvas and yakshas bowing to her [3].
The day
Siddhidatri is worshipped on Navami, the ninth day [3]. Navami is when many devotees complete their recitation of the Durga Saptashati, and it is a common day - alongside Ashtami - for kanya pujan, honouring young girls as the Goddess [5]. Customs differ: some families close their fast on Navami, others on Dashami. In Chaitra Navratri, Navami is also Rama Navami [5]. Our lotus pink is editorial; popular colour lists often give purple [5].
Puja and offerings
The final day often includes a havan (fire offering), the closing aarti, and a shared meal. Specific offerings vary; devotional sources disagree on her preferred flower and colour [4]. Follow your family or temple practice.
What her story teaches
Siddhidatri’s place at the end of the nine nights carries a simple lesson for visitors: perfection is not where the journey begins. It comes after effort, courage and purification - the qualities the eight earlier forms are said to represent. Navami is also a day of endings and handovers: many pandals hold their last big aarti, and preparations begin for Vijayadashami, the immersion of idols and, in North India, the burning of Ravana effigies. Reading the nine forms in order, from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri, is one of the clearest ways to understand how devotees experience the festival as a single journey.
