What “Navratri” means
Navratri (Sanskrit navaratri) simply means “nine nights” [1][2]. It is a festival of the Goddess - Durga, understood as a form of the supreme feminine power - held over nine nights and ten days, ending in many places with Dussehra on the tenth day [1][2].
A useful way to read everything below is to keep three kinds of statement apart:
- Devotional tradition - what texts and devotees say about the Goddess.
- Symbolic interpretation - what people take those stories to mean.
- Historical evidence - what we can date or document.
Tradition. The best-known answer is the Navadurga, nine forms of the Goddess worshipped one per day. Their names come from the Devi Kavacham, a hymn recited before the Durga Saptashati: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri [4].
Symbolic interpretation. Many teachers read the nine days as a journey - from the “daughter of the mountain” through discipline, courage and fierce protection to Siddhidatri, the giver of perfection. Others group the days in threes, for Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. These are interpretations, not rules found in one text.
Historical note. The nine-night length is old and widespread, but no single text explains “why nine”. Different regions answer differently.
Shakti: the power behind the festival
Shakti means power or energy. In Goddess-centred (Shakta) traditions, she is the active power of the universe; the gods themselves depend on her. The Devi Mahatmya (c. 400–600 CE, 700 verses in 13 chapters, appended to the Markandeya Purana) is the key early text that presents the Goddess as supreme [3]. Garba in Gujarat, for example, is described by UNESCO as a devotional dance honouring Shakti [5].
Durga and Mahishasura
Tradition (Devi Mahatmya). The buffalo-demon Mahisha defeats the gods. Their combined energies form a single radiant Goddess, Chandika, who receives their weapons and slays him [3]. The text also tells of her defeat of Madhu and Kaitabha, and of Shumbha and Nishumbha with the help of Kali [3]. The Saptashati is recited throughout Navratri, and many complete it on Navami [1].
Symbolic interpretation. Mahisha is often read as ego, ignorance or brute force; the Goddess as clarity and collective good.
Vijayadashami and Dussehra
The tenth day, Vijayadashami (“victorious tenth”), carries two victory stories. In much of India it marks Durga’s victory over Mahishasura; it also celebrates Rama’s victory over Ravana [1]. In North India the ten to twelve days of Ramlila - staged performances of the Ramayana - build up to Dussehra and the burning of Ravana effigies; UNESCO inscribed Ramlila as intangible heritage in 2008 [6].
Tradition (later regional texts). Bengali tradition tells that Rama worshipped Durga in autumn before his battle - the akal bodhan, “untimely awakening”. This story belongs to later regional Ramayanas, not Valmiki’s, and we have not yet cited it from a primary text.
Sharad, Chaitra and Gupt Navratri
There are four Navratris in the year [1]:
- Sharad (Shardiya) Navratri - in the month of Ashvin (September–October); the most widely celebrated, and the one this site focuses on [1][2].
- Chaitra (Vasanta) Navratri - March–April, ending with Rama Navami [1].
- Magha and Ashadha Gupt Navratri - “hidden” Navratris, kept mainly by individuals or particular communities [1].
How India celebrates
Observances differ greatly, and none is “the” correct way [1]:
- Bengal and eastern India: Durga Puja, with clay images, pandals, and sindoor khela on Vijayadashami.
- Gujarat: Garba and dandiya raas, danced in circles around a lamp in a perforated clay pot or an image of the Goddess [5].
- North India: fasting, kanya pujan on Ashtami or Navami, jagratas, and Ramlila [1][6].
- Tamil Nadu and Karnataka: Golu or Gombe, tiered displays of dolls; Mysuru’s Dasara procession [1].
Navratri in Jabalpur
Jabalpur - often called Sanskardhani - is known for its Durga festival. Here we only report what we could source:
- Pandals. A 2026 travel feature reports more than 300 prominent public pandals and over a thousand Durga images across the city, with large crowds at Mahakali shrines in areas such as Gadha Phatak and Padav, and at Sunarhai and Nunhai [7]. It also mentions the city’s Bengali community keeping its own Durga Puja traditions, and Ramlilas said to be more than a century old [7]. These are journalistic claims we are still checking.
- Jawara. During Chaitra Navratri 2026, local press reported ghatasthapana at the start, about 1,100 jawara (pots of sprouted grain) arranged at the Badi Khermai temple, and a jawara immersion procession after Navami [8]. Whether the same pattern holds in Sharad Navratri needs checking.
- Immersion. Big idols leave in long processions at the end of the festival. In 2020, “Jabalpur Ki Maharani” Mahakali was carried overnight about 12 km to the Bhitauli immersion kund at Gwarighat [9].
