Overview
Subhadra Kumari Chauhan is best known for one poem, Jhansi ki Rani, whose refrain “khoob ladi mardani” every generation of Hindi readers knows. She was born near Allahabad in 1904 but lived her adult life in Jabalpur, where she wrote, raised her children, went to jail for the national cause, and entered the provincial legislature [1][2]. She died in 1948 at 43, on the road home to Jabalpur [1].

People and events
The Flag Satyagraha. On 18 March 1923 nationalists hoisted the tricolour on Jabalpur’s Town Hall. When police surrounded the building, leaders including Pandit Sundarlal Sharma, Makhanlal Chaturvedi and Subhadra Kumari Chauhan gathered outside with about 300 workers [3]. Chauhan and her husband were in the front line of the campaign in Jabalpur, and she was arrested [2].
Home and family. Her first child, Sudha, was born at home in Jabalpur after her release [2]. The Chauhan house was a meeting place for Hindi writers and poets [2].
1942 and after. When her husband was arrested in the Quit India Movement, she chose to court arrest too, even while caring for a sick daughter. The ward of Jabalpur Central Jail where she was held now bears her name [2]. She later sat in the legislative assembly of the Central Provinces [1].
The writing. Besides Jhansi ki Rani, her poems include Jallianwala Bagh mein Vasant, Veeron ka Kaisa ho Basant and the children’s favourite Yeh Kadamb ka Ped. Her stories, collected in Bikhre Moti and later books, dealt with middle-class life, especially women’s lives [1].
Why it matters
Chauhan joined political courage with simple, singable Hindi. Jhansi ki Rani gave generations a popular memory of 1857 [1]. For Jabalpur she is proof that the city’s place in the freedom movement was made by women as well as men [2][3].
What survives today
Her statue in front of the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation office, the jail ward named after her, a 1976 postage stamp, an Indian Coast Guard ship, and a 2021 Google Doodle all honour her [1][2]. Her poems remain in school textbooks.
