Overview

Harishankar Parsai is the name most Hindi readers think of first when they hear the word vyangya, satire. Born in 1924 near Itarsi, he settled in Jabalpur and spent his working life there, writing essays, stories and columns that mocked hypocrisy in politics, religion and everyday middle-class life [1]. He died in Jabalpur in 1995 [1].

Only a reference-level source could be opened for this article, so it is marked partially verified. The main dates are well established.

Key moments

  • 22 August 1924: Born at Jamani village near Itarsi, Hoshangabad district [1].
  • Undated: Settles in Jabalpur and founds the literary magazine Vasudha, which later closes after losses [1].
  • 1982: Sahitya Akademi Award for Viklaang Shraddha ka Daur [1].
  • 1992: Sharad Joshi Award [1].
  • 1994: C. M. Naim’s English translation, Inspector Matadeen on the Moon [1].
  • 10 August 1995: Dies in Jabalpur [1].

People and events

The magazine. In Jabalpur, Parsai started Vasudha. It was well regarded, but it lost money and he had to stop it [1].

The column. For years he answered readers in “Poochhiye Parsai Se” in Deshbandhu, a paper published from Raipur and Jabalpur. The column turned a question-and-answer format into a small daily satire [1].

The books. His best-known works include the satires Viklaang Shraddha ka Daur, Pavitrata ka Daura and Do Naak Wale Log; essays such as Awara Bheed ke Khatare; the story Bholaram ka Jeev; and the novels Tat ki Khoj and Rani Nagphani ki Kahani [1].

On screen. Doordarshan’s Parsai Kehate Hain, in the early 2000s, adapted his writing for television [1].

Why it matters

Parsai showed that satire could be serious literature in Hindi. He wrote from a provincial city, not from Delhi or Bombay, and his targets - corruption, false piety, empty patriotism - were drawn from the life he saw around him in Jabalpur and the country [1]. Many later satirists name him as their model.

What survives today

His books remain in print and on syllabuses. The television adaptations survive in Doordarshan’s archives [1]. We did not find a documented memorial or house museum in Jabalpur.

Myths and documented history

Documented: dates of birth and death, his Jabalpur life, the magazine, the column and the awards [1].

Not established here: the exact year he moved to Jabalpur and his first jobs in the city.
