Overview

Jabalpur is not famous for a long list of dishes. The Wikivoyage editors even note that the city has little distinctive local cuisine, though it serves many kinds of food [7]. But there is one item that nearly every writer returns to: the khoya jalebi. This article keeps to what can be sourced, which is mostly that jalebi, plus a look at the wider Mahakoshal table.

Key moments

  • By 1889: Harprasad Badkul is said to be making khoya jalebi in Jabalpur. Outlook and Wikipedia say he invented it that year [1][2][5]. Patrika is more careful: it says the recipe’s origin is not recorded and only that he was making it by 1889 [3].
  • Over the years: The recipe passed down the family, from Harprasad to Motilal to the present makers Chandraprakash and Manish Prakash, as Patrika tells it [3].
  • 2017: Press features describe the shop as an icon of the city’s food map [2][3].

What it is

Outlook Traveller calls it a khoya-and-arrowroot batter jalebi, dark and spongy, with the texture of a gulab jamun in the usual spiral [1]. Patrika adds that the family uses pure desi ghee, which it calls their identity, and that the sweet keeps for about eight days [3]. That is one family’s claim; do not assume every shop’s version lasts as long.

The shop sits on Sarafa Bazaar near Kamania Gate, according to Outlook [1]. Wikivoyage lists the same area, with a Jawahar Ganj address [7].

People and events

The Badkul story is a family story, and that matters. Patrika traces the recipe from Harprasad through Motilal to the present makers and mentions that about a decade before 2017 the family supplied jalebi to a railway station stall, which was later shut. It also notes that no geographical indication (GI) claim had been filed [3]. Wikipedia’s footnote for the 1889 date points to a community history of the Parwar Jain society, which we could not open [5]. So the date rests on family memory and on press that repeats it, and we treat it as tradition.

Beyond the jalebi

MP Tourism describes Mahakoshal, which includes Jabalpur, as a region shaped by Gond, Kalchuri, Satavahana and Maratha influences, with a table of local grains, forest produce, ghee and river fish [4]. It lists chakki ki shaak, bhutte ki kees, poha, sabudana khichdi and mahua dishes among the vegetarian items, a Jabalpur Seekh Kebab and a fish curry among the non-vegetarian ones, and khoprapak, mawa bati, malpua and pistachio kulfi among the sweets [4]. The page names Jabalpur only in the kebab and does not say the rest began here. We therefore describe these as regional dishes, not Jabalpur inventions.

At street level, Outlook’s 2017 walk through the city puts gatpat, a bowl of boiled potato with sev and chaat masala near Kamania Gate, beside Badkul as an icon of the food map. It also records chikki carts in Sarafa after dark, poha-jalebi from Kesarwani Sweets, and lunch at the Indian Coffee House on Sadar [2]. For practical guides, see Jabalpur Sweets, Sarafa street food, poha-jalebi breakfast and the Jabalpur food guide.

Why it matters

Food is how many visitors meet a city, and the khoya jalebi is Jabalpur’s most repeated example. It is also a good case study in how a nice story becomes “fact” through repetition: travel features cite each other, and Wikipedia cites them back.

What survives today

The shop and its sweet are still sold, and the dish is widely listed as a Madhya Pradesh specialty [1][5]. The wider story, such as who first cooked what, is mostly unrecorded.

Visiting

Find Badkul Sweets near Kamania Gate in Sarafa. No opening hours or prices were found, so ask locally or phone ahead. Buy khoya jalebi fresh and eat it soon [1][3][7].

Myths and documented history

Documented: the sweet is sold in Jabalpur, is made with khoya and arrowroot, and was being made by the Badkul family by 1889 on their own account [1][3].

Tradition: that Harprasad Badkul “invented” it in 1889. Disputed: the “about 150 years old” line in Patrika’s subtitle, which conflicts with its own date. Unsupported: that khoya jalebi exists only here, or that mawa bati, khoprapak or malpua began in Jabalpur.
