Overview

A few kilometres west of Jabalpur, the Narmada leaves the roar of the Dhuandhar Falls and slides into a narrow channel between cliffs of white marble. This is Bhedaghat (also spelled Bheraghat), the city’s best-known sight and one of the most striking river gorges in India [4]. In 2021 India placed Bhedaghat-Lametaghat on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, for its geology and fossils as much as its beauty [1].

Timeline / Key moments

  • Proterozoic eon - Limestone laid down in an ancient sea is metamorphosed into marble, part of the Mahakoshal Group [1].
  • Later geological time - The Narmada, flowing in a rift valley (a graben bounded by faults), cuts down through this marble, leaving V-shaped gorges and an abandoned channel that hints at tectonic shifts of course [1].
  • 1828 - W. H. Sleeman collects the first dinosaur fossil from the nearby Lameta Bed [1].
  • 2021 - UNESCO Tentative List [1].

People and events

The rocks themselves are the main actor here, but people have long gathered at the gorge. The hill above it carries the Kalachuri-era Chausath Yogini Temple (see Chausath Yogini Temple). In 1828 the British officer W. H. Sleeman found a fossil that made the Lameta beds famous among palaeontologists [1].

Why it matters

Geology. UNESCO’s dossier describes Bhedaghat as the only place where the Mahakoshal Group’s marble, phyllite, banded iron formation and quartzite are seen together [1]. The marble formed by regional metamorphism - limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure over a wide area. It is rich in magnesium and relatively soft; besides the famous white there are blue-grey and brownish bands [2].

A river in a rift. Inside the gorge the Narmada narrows from about 90 m to about 18 m [3]. The deep, steep-walled channel is a product of the river cutting down as the rift-valley block moved.

Fossils. The Lameta beds around Bhedaghat-Lametaghat have yielded dinosaur bones and fossil crocodile egg nests [1], making the area important to India’s Cretaceous record.

What survives today

The gorge itself; Dhuandhar Falls; the marble-carving stalls that sell souvenirs; and the hilltop temple. Fossil localities around Lametaghat are part of the UNESCO proposal [1].

Visiting

Row boats take visitors downstream of the falls through the marble channel. Full-moon nights are traditionally the most popular time, with large crowds on Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima, when bathing and boating are considered sacred [2]. In the monsoon the river runs high and boating is often suspended; check locally. Dhuandhar Falls and the Chausath Yogini Temple can be combined in the same visit (see Dhuandhar Falls).

Myths and documented history

  • “Bandar Kudni.” The local name - “where monkeys jump” - and the story that the gorge was once narrow enough for monkeys to leap are folklore reported by the press [2].
  • Gorge length. About 3 km in UNESCO’s dossier [1]; about 8 km in other accounts [5]. The difference may depend on where the gorge is said to start and end.
  • Cliff height. Often given as about 30 m (100 ft), but no source was found; treat with care.
