For most visitors, Jabalpur is best between October and March. Wikivoyage says September to March and tells you to avoid summer [4]. Climate by month
These are 1991 to 2020 averages for the Jabalpur Airport station, from the India Meteorological Department and the Tokyo Climate Center, as tabulated on Wikipedia [1]. They are averages, not forecasts.
- Winter (December to February): mean maximums of 25.8, 24.3 and 27.9 C, and minimums of 11.0, 10.7 and 13.6 C. Rain is light, from 2.9 to 19.7 mm a month [1].
- Spring (March): mean maximum 33.3 C, minimum 18.2 C [1].
- Summer (April to June): April averages 38.5 C, May 41.3 C and June 37.6 C for the maximum. May’s record high is 46.7 C [1]. Nights stay warm, with May’s mean minimum at 27.4 C [1].
- Monsoon (July to September): July and August bring 429.8 and 443.0 mm, September 213.7 mm; maximums fall to about 30 to 31 C [1].
- Post-monsoon (October and November): maximums of 31.8 and 29.1 C, with little rain, 30.0 and 10.0 mm [1].
The annual total is 1,367.8 mm [1]. The coldest recorded value in this series is 0.0 C, in February [1].
Heat advice
Editorial advice, not an official rule: if you must come in April to June, do your sightseeing in the first hours of the morning and the last hours of the day, rest in the middle, and carry water, a hat and sun protection. The Bhedaghat day trip page suggests a heat-friendly order. Wikivoyage’s blunt advice is to avoid summer [4].
Bhedaghat: monsoon or winter
This is the main trade-off. Incredible India says the falls are most dramatic from July to September, but boat rides may pause for safety when the river is in full flood, while October to March has calmer water and better boating [2]. Free Press Journal reported that in 2024 Bhedaghat, Dhuandhar, boating and the ropeway were closed until 15 October for tourist safety [3]. Wikivoyage gives a similar window for boats, July to September, though that page is dated [4].
Editorial advice: choose winter for the Marble Rocks boat ride and the full plan. Choose the monsoon only if the roaring falls matter most, and then see Dhuandhar Falls and confirm what is open on the day. Check the official site and local authorities for this year’s dates.
Moonlit nights are a traditional favourite: Wikipedia says Purnima is considered the best time for boating, and Incredible India says full-moon nights allow boat rides until midnight [2][10]. These are reports, not a guarantee of service.
Festival calendar
All festival dates follow the lunar calendar and move each year.
- Navratri and Dussehra (autumn): the city’s big public Durga pandals and the Dussehra procession. In 2025 the Dussehra procession carried about 21 samiti idols, with the Garhafatak Mahakali as the finale, and immersion followed the next morning at Hanumantal [11]. - Sharad Purnima, Narmada Mahotsav at Bhedaghat (autumn): utsav.gov.in describes a two-day Narmada festival at Bhedaghat on Sharad Purnima, with performances and a food festival, running since 2005 [8]. The Hitavada reported the 22nd edition in October 2025 [9].
- Kartik (October to November): a large fair at Gwarighat in the Hindu month of Kartik [12].
- Narmada Jayanti (winter): held at Gwarighat with a procession, bhajans and an evening Maha Aarti [5]. It falls on Magh Shukla Saptami [7]. In 2026 The Hitavada reported large crowds at Gwarighat and other ghats on 27 January [6]. See Gwarighat.
Good to know
- Crowds: at festival peaks the ghats are crowded and traffic is changed. In January 2026, private vehicles were restricted near the ghats [6].
