Street Food in Jabalpur: Sarafa, Fuhara and the Old Marketsजबलपुर का स्ट्रीट फ़ूड: सराफा, फुहारा और पुराने बाज़ार

What is documented

Jabalpur does not have a street-food scene as thoroughly written about as Indore’s, so this page is short and says where the evidence ends. Two things are supported: Sarafa Bazaar in the old city, and snacks near the Fuhara fountain. Gol Bazar, which this page’s name includes, is something we could only confirm as a place and not as a food market.

Sarafa Bazaar after dark

A 2017 Outlook Traveller visit to Jabalpur describes Sarafa Bazaar as part of the old city, lined with crumbling havelis, jewellery stores and brass utensil shops. After dark, the writer says, the market fills with street food [1]. She bought a large block of rajgira (amaranth) chikki from a pushcart, and mentions a shop selling attar, which is a perfume oil from flowers, herbs and leaves [1]. The article gives no opening or closing hours [1].

The same magazine places the khoya jalebi of Badkul Sweets in Sarafa Bazaar near Kamania Gate [2]. For that sweet and the family behind it, see Jabalpur Sweets.

The area has older buildings too. A 2019 heritage walk by Sahapedia began in front of Kamania Gate, Sarafa, and passed shophouses in the market area near Kotwali that belong to periods from the Maratha to the British era [5]. Not to be confused with Indore’s Sarafa Bazaar, which is a far better-known night food market [7].

Fuhara and the night snacks

Wikivoyage’s community-written entry mentions small vendors near Fuhara serving lassi, rabri and khoya jalebi at night, and lists Badkul near Kamaniya Gate [3]. It also says food carts at Chowpatti, Civic Centre serve bhelpuri, chowmein and pav bhaji [3]. Because the entry is community-written, take these as pointers to ask about, not as confirmed listings. Outlook’s writer also notes a street seller near Fawara (Fuhara) offering gatpat: boiled potatoes topped with sev, chaat masala and potato chips, served in a leaf bowl [1].

Gol Bazar

Wikipedia’s list of Jabalpur’s attractions places Shaheed Samarak in Gol Bazar [6]. That confirms there is a locality by that name. We found no reliable source describing street food or night stalls there, so we say nothing about it beyond its existence. If you know it well, tell us.

Festival-season crowds

A Patrika report from November 2020 describes crowded festival-season shopping at Sarafa, Fuhara, Gorakhpur, Ganjipura, Naudarbridge, Niwadganj and Mukadamganj, with parking short and vehicles left on the road [4]. The shops it describes are mostly jewellery, utensils, clothing and household goods, not food [4]. Plan a food walk for a quieter day if you want space.

Plan an evening

1. Reach the old city by late afternoon and leave the vehicle outside the busiest lanes [4].
2. Start near Kamania Gate and Sarafa and walk the lanes after dark [1][5].
