Why go
Sangram Sagar is one of the lakes that Jabalpur’s Gond rulers are credited with creating. The Hitavada, reporting on its 2023 renovation, says the pond dates to the Gondwana era and belongs with Jabalpur’s many Gond-period ponds [1]. Beside it, travel sites place a Bhairav temple, Bajnamath, which they link to the Gond ruler Sangram Shah [3][4][5]. If you have seen Madan Mahal and want a quieter, more local second stop, this is it.
What you will see and do
The lake. After the 2023 work, the pond has new civic amenities and a cafeteria, and a ceremony with lamps along the bank marked its reopening. The cost was Rs 1.52 crore under the Mega Tourism Circuit scheme [1]. The article describes the setting as hilly and forested and says that in British times the pond was called Jabalpur’s natural air-conditioner [1]. A commercial travel page adds a fort and a temple beside the water [3]. We could not verify that detail independently.
Bajnamath temple. Travel sites describe a Bhairav shrine, with Tantric worship and Mondays as the busiest day [4]. Thrillophilia places it on Tilwara Ghat Road, ahead of the Medical College in Garha [5]. It is an active place of worship. Wikipedia’s list of attractions names both the lake and the temple but gives no description [2].
Getting there
One travel page gives about 15 km from the Jabalpur bus stop for the lake [3]. The temple is said to be on Tilwara Ghat Road [5]. We found no official map, transport timetable or parking information, so use a local driver or a map app. A combined trip with Tilwara Ghat may be possible by road, but we did not verify distances.
Best time
We found no official guidance. The cooler months and late afternoon are the usual sensible choice for a lakeside walk. Monsoon conditions were not checked.

- Then go to the Bajnamath temple, keeping to its customs.
- Allow about one to two hours in all; this is our estimate.
History and stories
According to Wikipedia, Sangram Shah ruled the Garha kingdom from 1488 to 1541 [6]. Travel sites say he built the Bajnamath temple and the fort by the lake and worshipped Bhairav there [3][4][5]. We found no inscription or archaeological report for these claims, and the lake’s name is suggestive but not proof of who dug it.
