Why go
Indian Coffee House is a chain with a very particular origin story: the people who work in each outlet own the society that runs it. Jabalpur matters because the society that runs the restaurants across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh is based here, with its head office on Malviya Marg [2]. It is a place to sit, order coffee, and read the room.
This page is deliberately cautious about one thing. It is often said that the Jabalpur house is “the oldest Indian Coffee House”. The records we found do not support that as stated, and we explain why below.
What the record shows
The national picture. Wikipedia says the first outlet, then called India Coffee House, opened at Churchgate, Bombay, in 1936 under the Coffee Board [3]. In the mid-1950s the government moved to close the outlets, and the workers took them over and formed cooperatives. Wikipedia lists cooperatives in Bangalore on 19 August 1957 and in Delhi on 27 December 1957, and a federation on 17 December 1960 [3]. The article does not name any single “oldest” branch [3].
The Jabalpur society. The society’s own history says it began in 1958 in Jabalpur with 16 members, a capital of Rs 1,365 and one branch, after the government closed loss-making coffee houses at the end of 1957 and retrenched staff [1]. It describes how workers, advised to form cooperatives, set up a number of separate societies, Jabalpur’s among them [1]. It was registered under the Madhya Pradesh Co-operative Societies Act in 1960 [1][2]. The Hitavada repeats the 1958 start in 2025 [5].
First in Madhya Pradesh? Curly Tales says the society opened its first branch in Jabalpur on 9 January 1958 and calls it the first coffee house in Madhya Pradesh [4]. That is a narrower claim than “oldest in India” and is plausible, but we found it in only one popular article, so we mark it as a claim.
Is it the oldest?
- Oldest in India: No. A 1936 Bombay outlet and 1957 cooperatives elsewhere come earlier, according to Wikipedia [3].
- Oldest society: Not shown. The Jabalpur society dates to 1958 [1], after the 1957 Bangalore and Delhi cooperatives [3].
- First in Madhya Pradesh: Claimed, not independently verified [4].
- Oldest building in Jabalpur: Unknown. No source says which address was the first branch, or that it still serves.
Getting there
The society operates a number of restaurants in Jabalpur. Wikipedia mentions an 8th Jabalpur branch opening in October 2018 [3]. Outlook Traveller describes a Sadar Bazaar outlet near Kingsway Cantt as atmospheric, which is the writer’s opinion and the article’s date is not visible [6]. The Hitavada reported a new pure vegetarian branch opening in July 2025 inside the Mahakoshal Shaheed Smarak premises at Gol Bazar [5].
