Why go
Bandhavgarh is in Umaria district, a national park since 1968 and now part of a larger tiger reserve [7]. It is one of the major parks within reach of Jabalpur, and the reserve’s own page gives the road distance as 170 km to its tourist hub at Tala [1]. As with Kanha, this is a trip you plan around, not a quick side visit.
Distance and route
The reserve’s how-to-reach page measures from Tala village and lists Jabalpur at 170 km, Umaria at 32 km (the nearest railway station, on the Katni to Bilaspur section) and Katni at 97 km [1]. Incredible India also puts Jabalpur Airport (Dumna) at about 170 km [3]. Taxis and private transfers run from Jabalpur, Umaria and Katni, but no travel time is given [3]. Editorial advice: a safari at dawn, plus a long drive either side, is much easier with a night near Tala.
Incredible India’s page header names Jabalpur Junction as the nearest station, which conflicts with its own text and the reserve’s page [1][3]. Believe the reserve: Umaria is the closer railhead. See Getting to Jabalpur for how to reach the city first.
Zones and gates
The reserve names three core safari zones, Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli, and Tala is described as the most preferred [2]. Wikipedia lists the same three [7]. MP Tourism names buffer zones that stay open in the monsoon: Dhamokhar (Parasi gate), Johila (Chechpur and Gajwahi gates) and Panpatha (Pachpedi gate) [5]. Which zone you enter is set by your permit.
When the park is open
Incredible India says the park is closed in the monsoon, roughly 1 July to mid-October [3]. MP Tourism says core zones shut for a three-month breeding season from late June and gives no exact dates [5]. Outlook Traveller reported the core zones of six MP reserves, Bandhavgarh included, closed until 1 October in 2024, with buffer zones open [6]. The reserve’s page lists no closure dates [2].
Check the official site for the dates that apply this year. The portal also shows revised entry and exit times for safari dates from 1 October 2026 [4].
Best time
Incredible India calls October to March the most pleasant. April to June is hotter but often good for tigers, as animals stay near water and thinner undergrowth makes them easier to spot [3]. No sighting is guaranteed.
How safari booking works
The reserve’s page points to a Safari Booking link that goes to forest.mponline.gov.in, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal [2][4]. It also says a limited number of walk-in safaris are sold at the tourist counter, and that the Forest Rest House, family suites and log huts must be booked before the visit [2]. MP Tourism says the portal releases bookings in a rolling 120-day window at 11:00 AM daily, that only the Park Entry Permit is paid online, and that jeep hire and the guide fee are paid at the gate [5]. ID details must match the ticket [5]. For questions, the reserve lists the Field Director’s office phone numbers and an email on its page [2]. We do not walk through the portal steps, because they change.
What to carry
From sources: matching ID and ticket, and cash for gate payments [5]. From common sense: water, a warm layer for winter mornings, sun protection, muted clothing, and binoculars.
The fort
The park takes its name from Bandhavgarh Fort. Wikipedia repeats the local legend, in which Lord Rama gave the fort to his brother Lakshmana, and breaks the name into bandhav (brother) and garh (fort) [7]. That is tradition, not documented history. Incredible India says the fort is reached on foot from the Tala zone, with entry periodically restricted [3]. Ask locally before you count on it.
